Let's Encrypt vs Paid SSL Certificate: Which is Right for You?

We compare the differences, advantages and disadvantages between Let's Encrypt free SSL and paid SSL certificates. Which is the right choice for your business?

Free or Paid? Choosing the Right SSL

One of the most frequently asked questions when choosing an SSL certificate: "Is Let's Encrypt free SSL sufficient, or should I get paid SSL?" The answer to this question varies depending on your site type, business model and security needs.

In this article, we will help you make an informed decision by objectively comparing both options.

What is Let's Encrypt?

Let's Encrypt is a certificate authority that provides free and automatic SSL certificates, launched in 2016 by the Internet Security Research Group (ISRG). Its goal is to remove the cost barrier to using SSL to make the web more secure.

Let's Encrypt Features:

  • Completely free DV SSL certificate
  • 90-day validity period (with automatic renewal)
  • Automatic installation and renewal with ACME protocol
  • Easy management with tools like Certbot
  • Wildcard certificate support (with DNS validation)

Differences Offered by Paid SSL Certificates

1. Verification Levels

Let's Encrypt can only offer DV (Domain Validation). Paid SSL certificates offer three levels of verification:

  • DV SSL: Domain ownership verification
  • OV SSL: Organizational verification
  • EV SSL: Extended (highest level) authentication

2. Financial Guarantee

This is one of the differences. Paid SSL certificates come with a warranty whose amount depends on the product. This warranty applies, under the certificate authority's terms, to losses caused by a certificate that was issued incorrectly.

Let's Encrypt offers no financial guarantees.

3. Technical Support

Paid SSL certificate providers offer professional support for installation, configuration and troubleshooting. Only community forums and documentation are available on Let's Encrypt.

4. Certificate Validity Period

  • Let's Encrypt: 90 days (automatic renewal required)
  • Paid SSL: At most 200 days (since 15 March 2026; this limit drops to 100 days on 15 March 2027 and to 47 days on 15 March 2029). Multi-year plans can still be purchased; the certificate is reissued within the term

The 90-day period is no problem when the automation works properly. However, in case of server changes, DNS problems or automation errors, your site may temporarily remain without SSL.

5. Compatibility

Let's Encrypt is compatible with the majority of modern browsers. However, some older devices and systems (especially IoT, old Android versions, some enterprise gateways) may experience problems.

Paid SSL certificates usually offer broad browser and device compatibility that also covers older devices.

In Which Situation Is Let's Encrypt Sufficient?

  • ✅ Personal blogs and portfolio sites
  • ✅ Development and testing environments
  • ✅ Informative sites that do not require financial transactions
  • ✅ Projects with managers with technical knowledge
  • ✅ Startup projects with limited budget

In Which Situation Should Paid SSL Be Preferred?

  • 🔒 E-commerce sites (payment information)
  • 🏢 Corporate websites (brand reliability)
  • 🏦 Finance and banking applications
  • 🏥 Platforms that process health data
  • 📊 Sites with high traffic and income
  • 🤝 B2B platforms that should give confidence to business partners

Site Seals: Visual Trust

An important advantage offered by paid SSL certificates is trust seals. Logos of well-known brands such as DigiCert, Sectigo, GeoTrust are displayed on your site, providing visual confidence to visitors.

Trust seals can support the trust visitors place in the site.

Conclusion and Our Recommendation

Let's Encrypt is a great project that democratizes web security and is a perfect solution for simple sites. However, paid SSL certificates are usually the more suitable option for sites that do business, collect customer data and need to present a professional image.
