Basics

What is an automated SSL certificate?

Automated SSL is an annual subscription service that takes the manual work out of obtaining a certificate, installing it on your server and renewing it before it expires. The certificate is issued directly by the certificate authority over the ACME (Automatic Certificate Management Environment) protocol; you don't need to generate a CSR, wait for a validation email or upload files at every renewal.

As certificate lifetimes get shorter, automation becomes a necessity: under a CA/Browser Forum decision, from 15 March 2026 an SSL certificate is valid for at most 200 days; this drops to 100 days on 15 March 2027 and to 47 days on 15 March 2029. With automated SSL, this schedule doesn't concern you; your certificate renews itself for the whole subscription term.

Pricing

Automated SSL certificate prices

DATASSL offers 5 automated SSL products; annual prices start at $25.00. Prices are for a one-year subscription per domain and cover all renewals made during the subscription (excl. VAT).

How it works

How to get and install automated SSL

No domain name is requested at checkout. After payment, you start the subscription on the Automated SSL page of your customer panel; the rest is handled by the client on your server or by the AutoInstall agent.

1

Choose a product and pay

Choose Sectigo ACME if you will use your own ACME client, or RapidSSL or GeoTrust Plan + Automate if you want installation automated as well.

2

Start the subscription

Enter your domain on the Automated SSL page of your panel. With Sectigo ACME, www is added free to a single domain and the main domain is added free to a wildcard.

3

Connect the client

With Sectigo ACME, you enter the server URL and EAB keys shown in the panel into Certbot, acme.sh or win-acme. With Plan + Automate, the agent is installed on a Windows or Linux server with two commands.

4

The rest is automatic

The certificate is issued, installed and renewed before it expires. No reissues, CSRs or reminder emails to deal with.

For automatic renewal, your server must be able to complete domain validation: for HTTP validation port 80 must be open, while wildcard certificates use a DNS record (DNS-01).

Use cases

Who should use automated SSL?

Teams managing many servers

Instead of tracking certificate expiry dates on every server, you leave renewal to the client.

Container and Kubernetes environments

With ACME-enabled tools such as cert-manager and Caddy, a certificate is obtained as soon as a new service goes live.

Agencies and hosting providers

Certificates for client sites renew themselves; no outages caused by expired certificates.

Those who want commercial certificates

You use certificates from commercial certificate authorities such as Sectigo, RapidSSL and GeoTrust with the same ease as free certificates.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about automated SSL

How much does an automated SSL certificate cost?

At DATASSL, automated SSL products start at $25.00 per year (excl. VAT). The best-priced option for a single domain is RapidSSL Plan + Automate ($25.00). Wildcard options start at $164.98 (RapidSSL Wildcard Plan + Automate). The price covers all renewals made during the subscription.

What is ACME?

ACME (Automatic Certificate Management Environment) is an open protocol (RFC 8555) that lets SSL certificates be obtained and renewed automatically between a server and a certificate authority. Clients such as Certbot, acme.sh, win-acme and Caddy use this protocol.

What is the difference between Sectigo ACME and Plan + Automate?

With Sectigo ACME, your own ACME client on your server obtains and renews the certificate; you are expected to set up the client. With RapidSSL and GeoTrust Plan + Automate, the AutoInstall agent is installed on your Windows or Linux server with two commands and installs and renews the certificate itself.

Is there a wildcard automated SSL?

Yes. A wildcard automated SSL certificate covers all first-level subdomains of a domain (*.example.com); the best-priced option is RapidSSL Wildcard Plan + Automate at $164.98 per year (excl. VAT). With Sectigo ACME you can also choose wildcard coverage on the product page; wildcard certificates are validated with a DNS record.

Why are certificate lifetimes getting shorter, and how does it affect me?

Under the decision adopted by the CA/Browser Forum, the maximum lifetime of SSL certificates dropped to 200 days on 15 March 2026; it will drop to 100 days on 15 March 2027 and to 47 days on 15 March 2029. With a classic certificate, this means renewing manually several times a year. With automated SSL, renewal happens on its own, so the schedule doesn't affect you.

Why paid automated SSL instead of Let's Encrypt?

Let's Encrypt also uses ACME. With commercial automated SSL, however, the certificate comes from a commercial certificate authority such as Sectigo, RapidSSL or GeoTrust; certificate warranty, vendor support and subscription management are offered in one panel. You can keep using your existing ACME client by changing only the server URL and EAB keys.

Do I need to enter a domain name when ordering?

No. You enter the domain after payment, on the Automated SSL page of your customer panel, when starting the subscription. With Sectigo ACME, the www address is added free to a single-domain subscription and the main domain is added free to a wildcard subscription.

What happens when the subscription ends?

The subscription is for one year. If you don't renew it, no new certificate can be obtained after the term ends; the last certificate on your server keeps working until it expires. You can track your subscription from your panel.
