How to Solve the "Failed to Establish a Secure Connection to the Server" Error?

Reasons for the error message "A secure connection to the server could not be established because an SSL error occurred" and solution methods on both the user and server sides.

4 min read

The message "A secure connection to the server could not be established because an SSL error occurred" means that your browser was unable to establish an encrypted communication channel with the web server. This error shows up with different messages in different browsers, but it basically refers to the same problem.

What Does This Error Mean?

When your browser tries to connect to a website, an SSL/TLS handshake occurs in the background. If there is any problem in this process, "secure connection could not be established". error occurs.

Views in different browsers:

  • Chrome: ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR or ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH
  • Firefox: SSL_ERROR_HANDSHAKE_FAILURE_ALERT or SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER
  • Safari: "Safari cannot open this page because a secure connection could not be established"
  • Edge: ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR

Possible Causes

1. Expired SSL Certificate

When the SSL certificate expires, browsers reject the connection. This is one of the most common reasons.

2. Missing Intermediate Certificate (CA Bundle)

If the SSL certificate chain is not completed, browsers cannot verify the certificate. Intermediate certificates must be installed on the server along with the main certificate.

3. TLS Protocol Incompatibility

If the server only supports older TLS versions (1.0 or 1.1), modern browsers will reject the connection. Today, TLS 1.2 and 1.3 are considered standards.

4. Incorrect Certificate Configuration

This error occurs if the certificate file and private key do not match or if the certificate is issued for the wrong domain.

5. Firewall or Antivirus Block

Some security software intercepts SSL/TLS traffic and can cause connection problems.

6. DNS or Network Problem

Incorrect DNS resolution or network configuration may prevent the SSL connection from being established.

User Side Solution

If you received this error while visiting a website, try these steps:

  1. Refresh the page: Refresh by clearing the cache with Ctrl+Shift+R (Mac: Cmd+Shift+R)
  2. Check the date and time:If your computer's date is incorrect, certificate verification will fail
  3. Clear the browser cache: Outdated certificate information may remain in the cache
  4. Try a different browser: You'll know if the problem is browser-specific
  5. Try a different network connection: Test with mobile data or different Wi-Fi
  6. Turn off VPN/Proxy: VPN or proxy may be disrupting the SSL connection
  7. Turn off antivirus SSL filtering: Temporarily disable your security software's HTTPS/SSL scanning feature
  8. Change DNS: Try using Google DNS (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1)

Solution for Server Administrator

If you are getting this error on your own website:

Check SSL Certificate

  • Make sure the certificate has not expired
  • Check that the certificate is issued for the correct domain
  • Verify that all intermediate certificates (CA Bundle) are installed
  • Check that the certificate and private key match

Update TLS Configuration

  • Enable TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 support
  • Disable SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1
  • Configure powerful cipher suites
  • Ensure forward secrecy (ECDHE) support

Renew Certificate

If your certificate has expired or is problematic, you must renew it immediately. You can re-secure your site with affordable SSL certificates from DataSSL.

If the error persists

Conclusion

"A secure connection to the server could not be established" The error is usually caused by certificate expiry, lack of intermediate certificate or protocol incompatibility. This problem can be easily solved with simple steps on the user side and the correct SSL configuration on the server side.
