The short answer: a free SSL certificate encrypts the connection just as strongly as a paid one. The difference is not encryption but lifetime, the type of validation, warranty and support. Which one fits depends on what your site does and how much you can automate.
What is the same
Both secure the connection with TLS, both show the padlock in the address bar and both are accepted by all common browsers. Search engines do not care whether the certificate cost anything.
The differences
| Feature | Free (e.g. Let’s Encrypt) | Paid |
|---|---|---|
| Encryption | Same | Same |
| Validation | Domain only (DV) | Domain (DV), organization (OV) or extended (EV) |
| Lifetime | 90 days | Up to 200 days per certificate, service period 1 to 3 years |
| Renewal | ACME automation effectively required | Manual or automated |
| Company name in the certificate | No | Yes, with OV and EV |
| Warranty | None | Depends on the product |
| Support | Community forum | Direct support |
When is a free certificate enough?
- Blogs, personal projects and test environments.
- When your host or server renews reliably and automatically.
- When no company name needs to appear in the certificate.
When is a paid certificate worth it?
- Online shops and company sites: OV and EV certificates contain the verified company name.
- Systems without automation: firewalls, mail servers, appliances. Swapping by hand every 90 days is error-prone.
- Special needs: certificates for public IP addresses or many domains in one certificate.
- When you want help: with validation, installation or an error shortly before expiry.
A common myth: "free is less secure"
It is not. What makes a site insecure is not the price of its certificate but expired certificates, missing redirects to HTTPS and outdated server settings. An automatically renewed free certificate beats a forgotten paid one.
Decide in three questions
- Is renewal fully automatic? If not: a paid certificate with a longer lifetime.
- Should the verified company name appear in the certificate? If yes: OV or EV.
- Do you need a warranty or direct support? If yes: paid.
Current prices are on the price list. The SSL checker shows whether your existing certificate is set up correctly.
