1. CDN and Caching Strategies
Content Delivery Network (CDN) delivers content from the closest point to each visitor by distributing your website's static files to servers around the world. CloudFlare, BunnyCDN and KeyCDN are popular CDN providers.
Make dynamic pages static with server-side caching. Cache database queries using Varnish Cache, Redis or Memcached. This alone can noticeably reduce page load time.
Prevent files from being re-downloaded on repeat visits with browser caching. Keep CSS, JS and images in the cache for a long time by configuring the Cache-Control and Expires headers correctly.
2. Visual and File Optimization
Images make up a large part of the total size of most web pages. You can significantly reduce the image size by converting to WebP or AVIF formats. Quality loss remains to a minimum.
Delay the loading of images at the bottom of the page with lazy loading. Modern browsers support loading="lazy". In this way, first page load time is significantly improved.
Minify and combine CSS and JavaScript files. Reducing HTTP requests improves performance. Significantly reduce the transfer size of text-based files with Gzip or Brotli compression.
3. Database Optimization
Slow database queries are the biggest enemy of hosting performance. Detect slow queries by activating MySQL slow query log. Analyze query plans with the EXPLAIN command.
Perform regular database maintenance: purge unnecessary revisions, run table optimization, delete unused plugin tables. Tools like wp-optimize automate these processes.
Database indexing critically improves performance. Add indexes to frequently queried columns. However, excessive indexing can reduce write performance, strike a good balance.
4. HTTP/2, HTTP/3 and Server Settings
HTTP/2 protocol transfers multiple files in parallel over a single connection with its multiplexing feature. HTTP/3 provides an even faster connection with the QUIC protocol. Be sure to enable these protocols on your hosting server.
Optimize the number of PHP-FPM workers according to your server resources. Too low a worker count creates a queue, too high a number causes memory problems. The right number depends on the available memory and the average memory use of a PHP process.
Enable Keep-Alive connections, use DNS prefetch to reduce DNS resolution time, and minimize render-blocking resources by placing critical CSS inline.
