An SSL certificate costs between nothing and several hundred dollars a year depending on its type. Three things decide the price: how thoroughly the owner is verified, how many domains the certificate covers and how many years you buy.
Price levels by type
| Тип | What is verified? | Price level per year | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| DV (domain validation) | Control of the domain | Lowest | Blogs, small sites |
| OV (organization validation) | Domain and company | Medium | Company sites, shops |
| EV (extended validation) | In-depth company check | Highest | Banks, large shops |
| Wildcard | As DV or OV | Well above a single domain | Many subdomains |
| Несколько доменов (SAN) | As DV, OV or EV | Base price plus a fee per extra domain | Several domains, one certificate |
All current amounts are on the price list.
What drives the price?
- Validation level: the more the certificate authority verifies, the more work and the higher the price.
- Coverage: one domain is cheapest; a wildcard covers all subdomains of one level, multi-domain covers different domains.
- Бренд: well-known brands cost more but do not encrypt more strongly.
- Warranty amount and term.
Where can you save?
- Buy for several years. A two- or three-year term lowers the price per year; by how much is shown for each certificate on the price list.
- Size it correctly. For three subdomains a multi-domain certificate is often cheaper than a wildcard.
- Do not pay for a brand nobody sees. DV is enough for an internal application.
Costs that are often forgotten
- Working time: setup and renewal take time.
- Downtime: an expired certificate usually costs more than the certificate itself.
- Перевыпуск (Reissue): certificates are valid for at most 200 days; make sure reissue during the service period is included. At DATASSL it is free.
